The
Drakes Huddersfield Cricket League, sponsored by the Haigh family
of Barkisland, comprises of 30 clubs now, although that has
evolved somewhat from the first season in 1891 .....
In fact, four of the inaugural clubs Golcar, Holmfirth, Lascelles
Hall and Slaithwaite,
are still with us today.
The
League, the most westerly of the many Yorkshire leagues, is
to this day,
based in and around the Huddersfield & District ..... with
many of the clubs situated in the
picturesque Pennine area's of the Colne and Holme valley's
In
the west we reach right up into the Pennines, over the hill, though still in Yorkshire,
down into Delph , and then to their near neighbours Micklehurst (actually
in another county).
Our
most easterly club is Kexborough, just across the boundary into South Yorkshire,
with Barkisland being the most northerly club, finding ourselves in Calderdale,
and finally
to the south we go to Scholes, high above the Holme Valley overlooking
Summer Wine country.
Our
claims to fame are many, but here are two of them .....
In 1980, the then 24 Clubs in the league had all reached their
centenary,
the oldest of which was Lascelles Hall who first obtained a
field of their own in 1825 .....
and it was stated by cricket statisticians that by 1991, the
Huddersfield
area had produced more first class cricketers than any other
town or city in England.
So,
please take time out to browse our site, and we look forward to seeing you around
our
league in the season's to come
